Baptism: The Next Step

One of the most powerful experiences I had when I was in my old Youth Group back in Cambridge was one Youth Service when 4 young  people, one of whom was Sam (see below), were baptised. It was inspiring as we heard their testimonies of how they came to faith, and emotional as we saw them rise from the water into a new life with Christ. I remember thinking at the time, "this is what life's all about!"

The Early church, many of whom had seen Jesus die and come back to life, would baptise the new guys that believed as well. It was a sign of their commitment to Jesus, and a symbol of them dying to themselves and living for Him. Jesus had commanded them that they do it, so they did it - it was that simple.

Here at PBC Youth we're passionate to see young people who are fully committed to Jesus, who want to live for him, and who are willing to pay the cost of following him, being baptised as Jesus commanded. Think of it like a wedding - a great ceremony to mark the beginning of two people's walk with each other for the rest of their lives - that's what baptism is! It marks the beginning of your journey with God. You don't have to be perfect, but you do need to be committed.

Many of you have known Jesus personally and are fully committed to Him, but haven't yet taken that step of baptism - a confession to God and to those around you that your life is committed to Him. If that is you then I challenge you to take the next step. It's a difficult step, but its worth it!

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" -Matthew 28:19
